This fight still causes controversy today and to be honest I still do not know who won this fight.

  1. I found this very thorough analysis, and the verdict seems to be in favor of Shinohara. But is understandable that, from the position of the arbiter, the throw at normal speed, it is not easy to properly assess.

  2. In the days of full ippon, the requirements were 1) predominantly on the back, 2) Force, 3) Speed, and 4) Control. If the score is properly [in my opinion] given to Shinohara, should it be consider to lack sufficient control, and hence be waza-ari? Other perspective: All things being equal, right to the last nano-second, then the first person to land on their back loses. Shinohara wins.
